Nobody really knows for sure how or when a metalworking tool was designed or used. The process of making things using metals and fire has evolved over many years to create some remarkable metalworking tools used today.

In recorded history, blacksmiths were some of the first metalworkers of their time. Blacksmiths worked over hot fires using steel or iron to create fences, implements and parts. The most common metals used to form functional objects include tin, silver, lead, iron, gold, mercury and copper.

Metalworking tools are special types of implements that are usually large in size and made extremely strong to handle each function that they are designed for. Some types must be designed to withstand the pressures of extreme heat. Several varieties are even made by a metalworker for his specific task at hand.

For example, forceps, pliers and tongs may all be forged within hot furnaces to suit the purpose of a metalworker. In addition to crafting custom tools, a metalworker may rely on welding equipment, power tools, cutting and measuring devices, abrasives and assorted machines for various purposes.

The main purpose of using metalworking implements is to gives us the ability to create new objects formed from metal. There are several different tools used in the metalworking craft, which help a metalworker to forge new ideas and products. A craftsman relies heavily on some of these devices, but he also needs plenty of experience and skills to make a good product.

Most metal products will go through heat treatments of one sort or another to be able to soften, bend and manipulate the metal into any given shape. A well-designed metalworking tool provides the support and holding ability to heat different metals over the forge in a safe manner. Because this type of job entails working in such close proximity to heat and fire, many of these types of items are designed with long handles for safety purposes.

Common tools used in the forging process may include clamps, punches, pipe benders, wrenches, hacksaws, mallets and long handled tongs. Some pliers are often used in this type of work for handling the hot metal pieces when forging tools or casting metalwork.

Simple center punches are frequently used to burrow indentations into metal pieces. Holes can be created by drilling through these indentations. Long handled tongs have been used quite often to grip or lift other hot items while working on a project.

Three of the most common processes include joining, cutting and forming. Joining is accomplished by soldering, brazing and welding. Snips, shears, chisels and saws are all metal cutting tools used in the process of metalworking. Forming takes place as metals are heated without actually removing any pieces of the heated material.

Metals can be heated and redesigned using anvils and mallets. Certain types of metals may be heated to high temperatures, used in conjunction with hydraulic presses, and worked over with hammers. Some processes may require the use of metal lathe turners, pipe benders, steel presses, welding equipment and milling machines.
